Know your group

You may be giving it for granted that is somebody accepts an invitation to a hike he/she will be able to do it, but numerous could be the surprises when hiking with a new group.

Imagine you took holidays to reach a certain goal, and half-way through the hike you have to turn around because a member of your team just cannot do it…

To limit surprises, we prepared an easy form to be filled when creating a new team. Once you receive it back, highlight the limiting factors (the smallest numbers in the table) to assess the overall team´s strength. You can use this form when creating any kind of team, no kids needed… ;-)

Now you can go ahead to plan your hike accordingly and find a solution everybody will enjoy!

Download the parent & child forms here and distribute them among the participants.

How to fill “Know your group: parent form”

Please find here guidelines on how to fill the table:

Parent form.

Name:the name of the participant

Comfort:What you can do comfortably (you can talk while you hike, you will still be able to smile at the end of the day).

Limit:You know you can do it, but it is close to being very physically tiring and close to the outer border of your zone of comfort.

The comfort/limit range gives you some space to plan your hike. It is ok to have some hikers closer to their limit zone, as long as there are many other in their comfort zone that are willing to help (for example with weight).

When filling the form below, do it considering carrying the weight of your child.

I can walk*….

Flat path (km)

How many km/day you can walk on a flat path

With 200 m elevation gain  (km)

How many km/day you can walk if the elevation gain is 200 meters

With 500 m elevation gain  (km)

How many km/day you can walk if the elevation gain is 500 meters

With 800 m elevation gain  (km)

How many km/day you can walk if the elevation gain is 800 meters

Max elevation gain (m)

The maximum elevation gain you can do

Max elevation loss (m)

The maximum elevation loss you can do (if you have knee problem this could be a big limiting factor!)

Max weight (while carrying the kid) (Kg)

Extra weight you can carry with you while carrying your child

Number of days

Maximum number of days in a row you can do all of the above

Rest day every...

After these many days, you need a rest day to regain your strengths

Weather

Too hot (°C)

If it is hotter than this, you start losing strength, spped. This is important when drawing a hike, you can identify shaded areas…

Do you have the right clothing? Need to borrow some?

Too cold (°C)

Simply too cold to hike… (solution: find hikes in the sun! check exposition and vegetation cover)

Do you have the right clothing? Need to borrow some?

Too wet

Light rain and snow is ok? How much can you and your kid endure?

Do you have the right clothing? Need to borrow some?

Other

 Fears

For example, vertigo, fear of bears, dogs---? Anything relevant that could be a limiting factor for you

 Bad days

Days after an important sport event you may be just be tires, or if you have a strong cycle, the days you might not be able to move a lot…

 ….

Kid: your kid´s name

Parent: your name

Kid

Age

Age of the kid

Weight (kg)

Weight of the kid

Walk

Walk by his own (km or hours)

How long can your kid walk on your own? Remember it must be fun for them too! So if you need 2 extra hours because your kid must stop and look at every stone he sees… allow it! He will be happy to join again next time, and you will get some nice time out!

Needs a break every (h)

Either he is tired to walk or simply he gets bored…

Feeding

Breastfed (%)

This is just an idea how much extra “gear” the mom needs to take. Breastfeeding is of course super comfortable, but not everybody can/want to do it

Needs special food

Also an indication of extra “gear” the mom will take

Feeds every (h)

 If feeding stops are planned

Length of feeding (min)

How long will the feeding stop will be

Nappy change (n/day)

Indication of extra gear + stops + garbage produced to bring back

Sleeping

Tent

Is your kid (are you) comfortable sleeping in a tent? Will it be the first time?

House without heating

Are you ok having your kid sleeping in a house without heating?

House with heating

Is this option a must for you?

By highlighting the lowest values, you will have a good find the overall strength of the group, both in the comfort zone and in the case, you may have to push somebody close to their limits (check with them first of course!!). (See an example below).

It is very important to be very honest when filling the form, do not rely of capacities you had 3 months ago, because babies grows fast (and get heavy fast!!) and your body is going through continuous changes after giving birth. If unsure, it is the perfect opportunity to organize a day out with your baby and test yourself a bit in the neighborhood!

You can use this form on reverse as well.

Prepare a hike you would like to do and feel in the column what capacities you need to have to participate to this hike. You can send out this form to your friends to see how is up to the hike and can of course make it.
